Renewable Energy Systems

Renewable energy technologies encompass a broad, diverse array of technologies, including solar photovoltaics, solar thermal power plants and heating/cooling systems, wind farms, hydroelectricity, geothermal power plants, and ocean power systems and the use of biomass. There are some non-technical barriers to the widespread use of renewables, and it is often public policy and political leadership that helps to address these barriers and drive the wider acceptance of renewable energy technologies. Innovation may also be understood as a driver for processes that are best understood through the framework of life cycle analysis; environmental and social costs of renewable energy inputs may be assessed from extraction to processing, manufacturing, consumption, and end use.
